Richard A. Braun, MD, and Elaine Gill Join NMS Advisory Board

Neighborhood Music School Advisory Board


LOS ANGELES (July 29, 2013) - The Neighborhood Music School (NMS) in Boyle Heights announced today that Richard A. Braun, MD, founder and chairman of the Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles (JMCLA), and Elaine Gill, Vice Chairman of JMCLA, have joined the NMS Advisory Board.

Dr. Braun is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and a fervent amateur chamber musician with a passion for the viola. He was raised in a home filled with music, including that of the great cantors of the pre-World War II era, several of whom he heard as a child. Coming to Los Angeles in 1960, Dr. Braun joined the congregational choir at Valley Beth Shalom and met Cantor Samuel Fordis, who helped instill in him the love of Jewish music, taught him the essence of Nusachot and Trope and encouraged him to learn about new Jewish music


Ms. Gill, born and raised in Los Angeles, is a graduate of UCLA. She and her husband, David, are the parents of four sons and grandparents of seven. Elaine has had a life-long involvement in music and in the Jewish community. Since its foundation, she has been vice-chairman and an essential force of the Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles. A past president of Valley Beth Shalom, she has also served on the boards of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, American Jewish University, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federation Council, and is currently president of UCLA Hillel.Elaine Gill

The young students at NMS come from all ethnic and faith communities and we're pleased to be a part of their 100 years educating students in music and helping new residents of greater Los Angeles settle in to our community."

Established in 1914, the Neighborhood Music School will soon celebrate its 100th Anniversary enriching the talent, intellect and lives of its students. The Neighborhood Music School is located in a charming Victorian house it owns in Boyle Heights, just ten minutes east of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
